What is conscious or intentional dance?
“Conscious dance can be defined as unchoreographed, intentionally non-evaluative mindful movement commonly practiced in a group setting for purposes of authentic self-expression, self-discovery, interpersonal connectedness, and personal healing or growth.”

Do I need dance experience to participate?
Not at all! Dancing Your Depths is open to anyone who loves moving to music and exploring new ways to experience this human body of ours. Our gatherings have drawn in people all across the spectrum from “I’ve never done anything like this before” to “I’m a former dancer.”
What does a typical class look like?
Once you check in, make your way to the main dance space, where soft music will be playing. Settle in in a way that feels right for you; that might look like stretching on the floor, sitting in meditation, walking intentionally around the room, or dancing gently with the music.
We’ll then offer a theme for the class that you can continue to refer to throughout the practice. We’ll also be offering some related imagery prompts and “movement invitations” throughout the class, but these are suggestions and not directives. They can be very helpful for finding new and creative ways to move and experience your body in space, with others. Try them on and see how they feel … you might be surprised!
Sometimes we have brief moments of interacting with others to experience moving as a collective.
You’ll be supported by music of various genres as you dance your depths. You might find yourself smiling with joy, crying in a moment of self-compassion, or letting it loose to release a stressful week. Or all three!
We’ll join in a circle at the very end of class for a brief closing to honor the container we have created together.
I’m not sure I can keep dancing for all that time! Is this type of movement right for me?
The great thing about conscious dance practice is you are the teacher. Listen to your body, slow down when you have to, dance with only your elbows if everything else hurts, dance your “tired” dance when anything else feels too demanding. Self-modulation is key! Chairs will be available, you can sit on the floor, or you can lean against a wall. We have seen people with mobility limitations like rheumatoid arthritis or Parkinson’s disease find creative ways to dance and connect with others when sitting in a chair or dancing with only their hands.
Also, the music is supportive and paced intentionally to give you moments of both intensity and integration. This is not an aerobics class!
What do I wear?
If dancing in a yoga studio space, please come prepared to dance barefoot, in socks that aren’t too slippery, or lightweight shoes that have not been worn outside. In other public spaces, footwear options are more lenient!
As for clothing, comfort is key. But dress for this class the way you would for Colorado weather—in layers!
Can I bring items to dance with?
When we dance in yoga studio spaces, you’ll have access to supportive props like cushions, blankets, and chairs. Please, no hula hoops, glow toys, or similar items.
Can I bring my children with me?
For safety reasons and to honor the deep work that unfolds during this time, this offering is intended for adults only.
